Debutant Josh Little took 4-45 for the hosts as England slipped to 46-3 and 101-6.
But Ben Foakes and Tom Curran hit 61 and 47 respectively, both of which were unbeaten, to help England to victory.
England's best bowler took 4-35, Liam Plunkett contributed to Ireland being bowled out for 198.
Ireland came close to a first win over England in eight years, with excellent fielding and accurate bowling before Foakes' innings made the difference.
England are the favourites for this summer's World Cup having lost just one of their past eight ODI matches on home soil.
Captain Eoin Morgan fended a bouncer from Little behind while Joe Denly pulled a Boyd Rankin short ball straight to the fielder at mid-wicket.
George Dockrell made a stunning, diving catch to dismiss opener James Vince, before wicketkeeper Gary Wilson took a low, one-handed grab to dismiss debutant Dawid Malan.
Tim Murtagh's side were sluggish in the middle overs, but Foakes struck a six and a four off Rankin in the 33rd over to tip the match in England's favour.
Wicketkeeper Foakes played a patient innings, his half century coming from 70 balls, occupying the crease for 119 minutes.
The match had been reduced to 45 overs each after heavy rain delayed play, and it was Ireland who were batting first.
The pitch had a hint of grass on it, but none of the Irish partnerships could pressure England's bowlers.
55-0 soon became 77-4, with Paul Stirling and Kevin O'Brien both caught from overly aggressive shots, while Lorcan Tucker loosely chipped a slower ball from Plunkett to the cover fielder.
Foakes dismissed Andrew Balbirnie as the batsman lifted his back from off the ground after a leg-side wide from Joe Denly.
Mark Adair provided a late cameo, twice hitting Curran into the stands for six, but he was underdone by a superb 90.3mph yorker from Archer as Ireland faded.
