Cricket World Cup: England vs South Africa, The Oval - Stokes stars with bat and ball as England start campaign with win

Ben Stokes hit 89 with the bat, and took a stunning one-armed catch in a thrashing win at the beginning of the World Cup.

England - 311-8 / 207 - South Africa

Jofra Archer's bowling regularly exceeded 90mph, he took 3-27 in only his fourth one-day international match.

His pace and aggression meant he looked like taking a wicket with every ball.

But the play of the day surely has to go to Stokes, whose one-handed catch near the boundary is unlikely to be bettered for catch of the tournament.

Andile Phehlukwayo's sweep of Adil Rashid towards the mid-wicket boundary seemed too high for even Stokes to grab at first, but diving backwards with his right arm outstretched, he plucked it our of the air and clung on for the dismissal.

The crowd near that boundary had a great view of it - and Stokes showed a touch of class by taking the time to do some autographs during the batsman change.

In addition to Stokes' 89; Jason Roy, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan all hit half-centuries taking England to 311-8, a total that could have done with another 50 on.

They steadied after that, with Roy and Root combining for 106, before both falling in the space of four balls, before Morgan and Stokes shared 106 also.
Stokes began calmly - his first 31 runs came from 36 balls - but he gradually upped his scoring.
Quinton de Kock opened with 68, and looked to have his side in good contention to chase down England at 129-2, before falling for the first of three wickets in 15 runs.
Stokes took two wickets in two balls at the end of play to dismiss South Africa with more than 10 overs remaining.

If there were any doubters over Archer's credentials to be included in the squad, he certainly silenced them today.
Aiden Markram fended to slip and Faf du Plessis hooked to long leg.
De Kock added 85 with Rassie van der Dussen - with both surviving near misses.
Rashid looked to have bowled De Kock only for the bails not to come off, while Van der Dussen was dropped by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.
Archer returned to remove Van der Dussen with another short ball and, though Amla came back before gloving Plunkett behind, Stokes took over.
First came the wonder catch, before the consecutive wickets of Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir completed an impressive England display.

Europa League Final - Chelsea 4-1 Arsenal - Hazard scores brace and says 'goodbye' to Chelsea

Chelsea's stunning second-half performance in which they put four past Arsenal saw them crowned Europa League champions.

The win gave Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri the first trophy in his managerial career, and ensured that London rivals Arsenal will miss out on next season's Champions League.
The Olympic Stadium in Baku appeared less than half full, with only 5,000 from both sides making the 2,500 mile journey to Azerbaijan.
The lack of the crowd wasn't helped by the nature of the stadium, in which the seats seemed to be miles from the pitch, making for an atmosphere of a pre-season friendly rather than a European final.
Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock against his former club with a diving near-post header off Emerson's cross which went low into Petr Cech's net.
Cech, in the final match of his career before retirement, was helpless for the second goal as well when Pedro swept home a Hazard cross.
Hazard made it 3-0 from 12 yards sending former team-mate Cech the wrong way after Giroud was fouled by Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Substitute Alex Iwobi briefly entertained the idea of a comeback with a sumptuous volley soon after coming on, before Hazard scored the fourth after a clever one-two with Giroud.
In a post-match interview, the Belgian forward all-but confirmed his exit from Chelsea, with links to Spanish giants Real Madrid continuing.

The win gave Chelsea their fifth trophy in European competition, but their first since the Europa League win six years ago in Amsterdam.
Sarri's future remains in doubt, despite winning his first trophy as manager to end the season on a positive note. 
Whereas Unai Emery was unable to lead Arsenal back into the Champions League after after a two-year absence.
Three-time winner with Sevilla Emery was looking for a record fourth title, but loss in the showpiece this year will surely impact his ability to attract players to the club this summer. 
The damage was done in 16 second-half minutes, when Arsenal's defence suffered a collapse that has been all too familiar this season, conceding three quick goals. 
Hazard's performance in the final means it will more likely be remembered for footballing reasons, rather than the politics of the location which was discussed before the match. 
The player who has so regularly sparkled for Chelsea over the past seven years did not disappoint the Blues fans that did make the journey.
37-year-old Cech can't be blamed for any of the goals, and in fact helped to keep the score down with some good saves late on.
