Netball World Cup Final: New Zealand deny rivals Australia to win their fifth World Cup

New Zealand stunned defending and 11-time champions Australia in a thrilling World Cup final in Liverpool

The final was decided by just one goal in the dying seconds, as the Silver Ferns claimed their fifth World Cup, their first since 2003.
It was the sixth consecutive World Cup final that the Trans-Tasman rivals were competing in, and it was evenly poised at half-time.

With an 8,000-strong crowd willing on New Zealand to end the Diamonds' dominance in this tournament, they powered into a seven-goal lead.
Having beaten New Zealand by a single goal in their final group game, Australia came back and trailed by that same margin in the fourth quarter, setting up a nail-biting finale.
New Zealand secured a crucial turnover after a rare mistake between Caitlin Bassett and Kelsey Browne in the Australian attack.
After that, the Silver Ferns ran down the clock to secure the trophy.
It gave a number of players the perfect send off, with Kiwi veteran defender Casey Kopua and international centurions Laura Langman and Maria Folau likely to bow out as world champions.

Earlier, England had won their placing match to take the bronze medal after beating South Africa.
After suffering defeat on home soil in the semi-final, Tracey Neville's Roses comfortably saw off the Proteas to end their campaign with a win.
The win gives Neville the perfect send off as she departs after 70 matches in the top job to start a family.
The 42-year-old has been in the job for four years, taking the reins from Anna Stembridge and leading England to World Cup bronze later the same year, an achievement made all the more special for Neville after the death of her father on the eve of the event.
The former international shooter's time will be remembered as being the first England coach to win Commonwealth gold in 2018.

Starting with the same seven who finished against New Zealand, Jo Harten looked much more comportable under the post than against New Zealand, with her partner Helen Housby finishing with 100% shooting accuracy.After a nervy first half, the 2018 Commonwealth champions took a seven-goal lead against Norma Plummer's team - who were looking for their first medal since winning silver in 1995.
Despite playing their semi-final before England, it was South Africa who looked more fatigued, the new format of eight games in 10 days had clearly taken its toll.
World number three ranked side England's third consecutive bronze medal is surely a positive to be taken away from this tournament, but it still represents an eighth successive loss in a World Cup semi-final.

Like Neville, Plummer is stepping down from her managerial position after the tournament.
The 74-year-old netball legend was a world champion as a player and a coach for Australia, and will retire after her 50th match in charge of the Proteas.
She has overseen South Africa's rise up the world rankings, and leaves the team in good shape to contend for a medal at the next World Cup which Cape Town is hosting in 2023.
