Going into week four, van Gerwen had three wins from three, but lost 7-3 to Wade, having lead 3-2 early on.
Former world champion Rob Cross was on the receiving end of a thrashing by the Green Machine, but this week returned to winning ways with a 7-1 win over Daryl Gurney.
Mensur Suljovic got his first victory, despite a mini resurgence from Peter Wright, the Austrian won 7-4.
Winless Raymond van Barneveld was beaten 7-4 by World Championship runner-up Smith who won despite showing signs of discomfort, having had groin surgery three days ago to remove an abcess.
In-form Welshman Gerwyn Price missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish in his 6-6 draw with Luke Humphries.
World Championship quarter-finalist Humphries, this week's Contender, impressed on his Premier League debut and twice narrowly missed big checkouts to seal victory, he would have become the first of Gary Anderson's replacements to win.

Points won by the Contenders will not count towards the league table, but their opponents will retain theirs if they earn any from the match.
The player who finishes ninth in the table after Judgement Night in Rotterdam on 28 March will be eliminated.
The remaining eight throwers will then battle it out for a place in the top four to make it to the play-offs at The O2 Arena, London on 23 May.
