But he entered the event at the fourth-round stage against Mervyn King and looked a shadow of his usual self during the defeat.
The Green Machine took the first leg with a 170 checkout, but King responded with 14 and 13 dart legs to take the lead.
Van Gerwen then levelled the match before falling 5-2 behind, with King pouncing on the Dutchman's poor performance.
The next two legs went the way of the Englishman too, with Mighty Mike missing seven darts at double.
Van Gerwen made a small resurgence, winning three legs on the spin, including an impressive 11 darter, before King capitalised on another missed double to go 8-5 up, before a 141 checkout at the end of a 12 dart leg against the throw.
Another 12 dart break came next for Van Gerwen, with a 108 checkout, with King missing his first match dart.
King was comfortable in the next leg and hit double 6 to win for the first time in eight meetings with van Gerwen, a run lasting over five years.
The 52-year-old, earlier this season at Players Championship Three, was branded a "disgrace to darts" by the two-time UK Open champion for "not even trying to beat me".

Alongside Duzza in defeat on day one was defending champion Anderson, who suffered a shock exit at the hands of Steve Beaton, losing 10-8.
The Flying Scotsman won this trophy for the first time last year, and was appearing for the first time since his back injury ruled him out of the Masters and the Premier League, the last time he played competitively was in the World Championship semi-final.
Beaton produced his best performance for some time on the big stage to win a number of key legs.
Moving to a 4-2 lead, the Adonis then lost the next three legs only to level with an 80 checkout and lead again at 6-5 with a 130 checkout on the bull to break the throw.
The 54-year-old took out 100 for an 11-darter to restore his two leg lead at 8-6.
After getting back on level terms again, Anderson didn't get another dart at double as Beaton claimed victory against the two-time world champion for the first time since 2017.
Raymond van Barneveld also lost, playing his last match in the UK Open for the last time as he suffered defeat to Simon Stevenson.
Barney was playing catchup from the outset as Stevenson stormed 8-3 clear.
The Dutchman didn't give in, and rallied to 8-6 and 9-7 down, but he'd already given himself too much to do.
Rob Cross, Michael Smith, Gerwyn Price and James Wade will be eyeing up the chance to win their maiden UK Open titles after the two heavyweights' losses.
Cross thrashed Darren Webster 10-4, the 2018 world champion has got Mervyn King next.
Man of the moment Price maintained his impressive form with a 10-6 victory over Joe Cullen.
The Grand Slam champion is playing the best darts of his career since that final, his actions in that match resulting in a £21,500 and a three-month suspended sentence.
Next up for Price is Jamie Hughes, dispatched Ian White 10-5 during the evening session after some impressive performances earlier in the day.
Smith brushed aside John Henderson 10-5, while Wade won with a near whitewash 10-1 over James Wilson.
Smith will face Daryl Gurney, who crushed Reece Robinson 10-1, in the fifth round while Wade takes on rising German star Max Hopp.
Peter Wright lost with a 106 average to Mensur Suljovic, the Austrian hit a 170 checkout in his 10-8 win.
The clash of the Lewises finished 10-9, with Jamie coming out on top, the Welshman hit a 161 checkout in the deciding leg.
Meanwhile Dave Chisnall produced a fine comeback to defeat Luke Humphries 10-8 before being handed a draw with Martin Schindler.
Johnny Clayton and Nathan Aspinall are also through after wins over Aaron Monk and Christian Kist.
Elsewhere Dimitri van den Bergh beat Kirk Shepherd 6-0, after coming through a dance-off during the walk-ons.
He then defeated Ricky Evans 10-5 to set up a fifth-round test with Suljovic.
