The final day in a spectacular summer of English cricket ended with the hosts leveling the Ashes series.
England - 294 & 329 / 225 & 263 - Australia
England ended a dramatic summer of cricket with a 135-run win over Australia to level the Ashes series in the final Test.
England had set Australia 399 to win the Test at The Oval, but the tourists were bowled out for 263 to leave the series all square at 2-2.
Australia retain the urn by virtue of a 4-0 win down under in 2017-18 but miss out on the first series win in England since 2001, while this is the first time an Ashes series has been drawn in 47 years.
England had earlier added 16 from the overnight 313-8 to be all out for 329, leaving Australia in need of the highest run-chase in an Ashes Test since 1948.
England remained hopeful that Steve Smith would not be the star of the show, but on a good day for batting that didn't seem likely.
But, after what seems like an age, one of England's plans for him worked, as he turned Stuart Broad to Ben Stokes at leg slip for just 23, his lowest score of the series by 57 runs.
Matthew Wade made a combative century, but was stumped off Joe Root before the last three wickets fell for four runs with Root making a superb catch to dismiss Hazlewood to win the match.
Both teams have 56 points and sit joint-fourth in the World Test Championship table, while coach Trevor Bayliss' tenure comes to a end with a win.
England captain Joe Root challenged his team to see this match as the start of the preparations for the next Ashes series down under in 2021-22, with the urn already retained by the tourists.
Australia's decision to bowl first at The Oval seemed more wrong by every passing minute, with a puzzling team selection and some dropped catches.
But England's win was also down to some individual brilliance, with Joe Denly and Jos Buttler starring with the bat while the bowling attack was particularly incisive.
Broad removed Warner for the seventh time this series, before euphoric celebrations when Smith fell.
Jofra Archer's dual with Wade enthralled, with long stares and words shared between them, with Root's catch as the shadows lengthened the icing on the cake.
It would have been a dream to do a World Cup and Ashes double this summer, but drawing with Australia as well as being world champions should be seen as a success.
Bayliss' successor will have some work to do though - sorting out the top order batting, getting the best from Root as a captain and a batsman, deciding the best bowling attack - all before the New Zealand tour in November.
Broad has led the England attack in the absence of James Anderson, and has been reborn this summer with the second most wickets in the series.
He is the first England bowler to take more that 20 wickets in four separate series against Australia.
He had sent Marcus Harris' off stump cartwheeling, before he had Warner edge to Rory Burns at third slip to leave the left-hander with 95 runs from 10 innings this series, one of which was a 61 at Headingley, so 34 from the nine other innings.
It adds up to the lowest aggregates score for and opener playing in every one of a five-match series in the history of Test cricket.
The crucial moment came when Smith was removed.
The former captain had racked up 774 runs in the series, and after England appeared to have exhausted every plan to him, Broad had him turn off his hips to Stokes who grabbed and held on just above the turf.
Pat Cummins joined Wade and together they survived 15 overs, and just as the prospect of a fifth day was looming, Broad returned to the attack to find Cummins' edge to signal the beginning of the end.
Smith had begun the series and the throughout the World Cup being booed for his part in the sandpaper scandal.
But the final time he left the crease was met with a standing ovation, with The Oval crowd recognising that his individual brilliance was the deciding factor in the destination of the urn.
But by then, Wade was well into his stride, using his feet to get at left-arm spinner Jack Leach.
Team-mates in the Big Bash League for Hobart Hurricanes, Wade and Archer's bad blood seems to go back to an on-field exchange at Old Trafford.
Wade was threatened by a thrilling bowling spell as he neared his century, with Archer touching 95mph.
After he passed the milestone, the left-hander threw caution to the wind - surviving a stumping, a dropped catch at slip and successfully overturned being caught at slip all off Root, before he was finally stumped by Bairstow for 117.
Nathan Lyon turned Leach to square leg off the next over, and Root's catch off the next ball gave Leach figures of 4-49 to go with Broad's 4-62.
