Formula One: Bahrain Grand Prix - Leclerc engine trouble gives Hamilton victory

Mercedes once again took the top two spots on the podium after runaway leader Charles Leclerc suffered an engine problem while on course for his maiden victory.

Leclerc had a poor start and dominated after re-taking the lead in Bahrain, but a hybrid system failure proved to be his downfall.
The component in question cost him 40 km/h on the straights, leaving him defenceless to the advances of Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton closed the eight-second advantage that the Monegasque had built, and overtook with nine laps to go.
A late race safety car meant that Leclerc finished on the podium instead of finishing fourth after Bottas and Verstappen.

Having destroyed his teammate and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, Leclerc then saw victory slip from his grasp.
The German was not without problems either, spinning his car with 20 laps to go in a battle for second place with Hamilton.
Following Vettel's spin his Ferrari suffered a huge vibration before the front wing shattered and forced the car up into the air

Another mistake cast doubt over Vettel's ability in high-pressure situations, after last year's early collapse due to individual errors which cost him his title hopes.
The cause of the front wing breakage is as yet unknown, but the changing dynamics within Ferrari will be fascinating to see over the course of the season.
Vettel had started the season as their leader but Leclerc has now staked his claim and proved he will be a major force.

Both Renault cars failed with three laps to go, their retirement bringing out the safety car to preserve Leclerc's podium finish.
In sixth was Lando Norris, who performed well for McLaren, beating Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen, Red Bull's Pierre Gasly and Toro Rosso Alexander Albon, the Anglo-Thai scoring points in only his second grand prix.
The Chinese Grand Prix in a fortnight will be the 1,000th F1 race, and after differing form for Mercedes and Ferrari in Australia and Bahrain, it is wide open.
