Shai Hope, Roston Chase and Shimron Hetmyer had all hit fifties for the West Indies, with Anderson soon changing their good fortune. He dismissed Hope for 57, Chase for 54, Dowrich and Holder with the second new ball.
Ben Stokes caught Kemar Roach off the last ball to leave the score at the close of play 264-8.
Hetmyer remains 56 not out off 60 balls, he played an aggressive innings with five fours and two sixes, after Jos Buttler dropped a catch on three.
Stuart Broad was left out of the England squad in favour of Sam Curran, whose team hadn't offered much of a threat at the Kensington Oval, but were lifted by stunning performances from Anderson and Stokes.
The Burnley Express took 3 wickets for 6 runs in five overs, the second of those meant he became the first England bowler to take 200 Test wickets away from home.
Stokes struck twice before tea, returning to remove Roach for a duck, with West Indies losing four wickets for 24 runs towards the close, after collapsing from 126-1 to 128-3 earlier on.

I'm beginning to think that the phrase 'like a fine wine' was coined for Jimmy Anderson, he always seems to answer his critics, and he doesn't show any sign of stopping.
We saw Sir Alastair Cook towards the end of his career tailing off slightly, and although I accept pace bowling is a lot different to opening bat, Anderson isn't suffering any of these problems with age.
Playing his 146th Test, he took his tally of wickets to 569 after bowling 24 overs, the most of any England bowler on day one.
The 36-year-old is the record wicket taker for a seam bowler, and his importance in the team was summarised by Graham Onions saying, "It's the same as how much Australia missed Glenn McGrath. They're phenomenal bowlers who are greatly missed when they stop playing."
